Goodman Appointed Corporate Vice President

The Board of Directors of Balzer and Associates, Inc. is pleased to announce that Stephen “Taylor” Goodman, Jr. has been appointed a corporate Vice President.

Mr. Goodman has been with our company for 7 years. Taylor is a Virginia Tech graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree and became a Professional Engineer in 2004. In 2011 he became certified as a Nutrient Management Planner for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Taylor works in our Richmond office where he currently oversees the Wetlands Department.

A Sad Day

In 1960, Al James started a business in Salem, Virginia that fabricated wood trusses. Over the years that company grew and prospered and delivered innovative products to local builders and then expanded to provide its “Trussmark Homes” throughout our region and to countries such as Russia, Germany, Spain, Japan, Korea, China, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Mexico, Chile, and Cyprus. It’s hard to imagine how many homes and other buildings have Timber Truss under their roofs. In addition to their impact with their products, Timber Truss and its employees had a tremendous impact on our community, supporting so many charitable causes with their time, talent, products and money. The downturn in the housing industry over the past several years has claimed many victims. Today, sadly, it claims another. Balzer and Associates, Inc. salutes Al James, Gary Saunders and the hundreds of dedicated Timber Truss employees who have provided shelter in so many ways to our community and literally to the world. We will miss you!

Homes for Our Troops

The Balzer & Associates, Inc. New River Valley Office has had the honor and privilege of working with Massachusetts based Homes for Our Troops and Highlander Construction & Development of Radford, VA to provide a new home for Marine Sgt. Jeremy Austin and his family. Sgt. Austin, a Purple Heart recipient, served our Country bravely in Afghanistan and was on his fifth deployment when he lost both of his legs in an April 2009 IED attack. The new home, located in Pulaski County, will be completely accessible for Sgt. Austin and will provide plenty of growing space for his family. Homes for Our Troops is a non-profit organization that coordinates the home building process and raises money to build homes for severely injured Veterans and their family. Homes that are provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at no cost to the Veterans. Balzer and Associates, Inc. provided site selection and evaluation services, topographical survey services and construction stakeout services for the project. Balzer and Associates, Inc. expresses its sincere appreciation to Sgt. Austin and all of our men and women in uniform for their service to our Country and for providing the freedom under which we all live.

Today we all have that special privilege, conceived by our forefathers, granted by our Constitution, and defended by generations of brave men and women – the right to vote. If you are someone who always votes, please continue to do so. If you are not inclined to vote, please consider doing so today. If not for yourself, do it on behalf of people throughout the world who can’t.

As the dust settles on today’s elections I pray that those elected, whoever they may be, and at the Federal, State, and Local level, will take seriously their responsibility to serve the people who elected them. My hope is that they will be bold leaders that will confront, head-on and without partisan bickering, the many challenges that face our nation at every level of government. Only then can we be on the path to greatness and only then can we preserve the legacy of our forefathers for our children and grandchildren.

A Flood of Letters

If you live in Chesterfield County, Virginia you may have received one of thousands of letters from the County regarding “special flood hazard areas” and the new FEMA maps. The letter may have frightened or concerned you as it deals with the potential need for you to purchase flood insurance. The County has made it very easy for you to look at the 100 year flood plain as it relates to your property and County staff is available to answer your questions. In the event that you need further advise or assistance, our Engineers and Land Surveyors may be able to assist you. Specifically we can provide an Elevation Certificate that is used to rate insurance premiums or a LOMA (Letter of Map Amendment) which is used to remove a structure or all or a portion of a lot or parcel of land which may have been mistakenly identified within a special flood hazard area (SFHA). Our Richmond, Virginia professional staff can help you wade through the flood plain regulations.

Ground-breaking for St. James Baptist Church

A ground-breaking ceremony was recently held for the reconstruction of St. James Baptist Church in Powhatan, VA. Developed by Balzer and Associates, Inc. the construction project will have about 3,000 square feet of usable space at the same location where the old building stood. The project is scheduled to be complete in September.

Persinger Elected Chairman of Alleghany Co. School Board

Todd Persinger, a Vice President of Balzer and Associates, Inc., will serve as the new Chairman of Alleghany County’s School Board. Mr. Persinger was elected by a 4-3 vote during the Board’s reorganizational meeting held on Monday, July 9, 2012. Todd has served on the School Board since July 2010.

Each year Rotary International’s President selects a theme to guide Rotarians throughout the world during the coming year. In 2003, R I President Jonathan B. Majiyagbe’s theme was “Lend a Hand”. At Balzer and Associates, Inc. our people embrace this philosophy in their personal and professional lives. This week the Alleghany County School Board elected our own Todd Persinger as its Chairman for the coming year. Todd has served on the School Board for several years, lending a hand to his community as it educates the leaders of tomorrow. He does this even though he has no children. Today we salute Todd’s accomplishment, recognizing that it is just one example of the many ways in which our associates are helping within the communities in which we live and work.
